The History of the Royal Dublin Society
The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) has played a remarkable role in Ireland’s cultural and scientific history. Founded in 1731, fourteen Irish visionaries came together with the goal of improving Ireland’s economy and society through the promotion of agriculture, arts, industry, and science.
Their mission was simple but powerful: to encourage innovation by sharing knowledge and new ideas. Over the centuries, the RDS helped establish many of Ireland’s most important national institutions, including:
- National Botanic Gardens (1795)
- Royal Veterinary College (1800)
- National Gallery of Ireland (1854)
- National College of Art and Design (1877)
- National Museum of Ireland (1877)
- National Library of Ireland (1877)
Today, the RDS continues its mission as a leading venue for events, exhibitions, education and cultural exchange in Ireland.
