OUR HERITAGE: A VICTORIAN GEM IN DUBLIN 4
Ariel House is a Victorian townhouse guesthouse located on Lansdowne Road in Dublin 4, built in 1850 and welcoming guests since 1963.
Built during the reign of Queen Victoria, Ariel House began life as the elegant residence of a prosperous Dublin shipping merchant. Situated on Lansdowne Road, just moments from the Aviva Stadium and the city’s historic docklands, the house reflects the prosperity and architectural beauty of Victorian Dublin. Over time, the property expanded to include three adjoining Victorian townhouses: numbers 50, 52 and 54 Lansdowne Road, creating the charming and distinctive Ariel House Guesthouse visitors experience today.
Many of the building’s original nineteenth-century features remain beautifully preserved throughout the house. Guests can still admire the Flemish brick bonding, tall sash windows, elegant bay windows, ornate stained glass stairwells, and the traditional stone entrance, all reminders of Dublin’s rich architectural heritage.
In 1963, the property entered a new chapter when it first opened as a guesthouse, offering travellers a refined stay in one of Dublin’s most characterful neighbourhoods. Since 2002, the McKeown family has carefully restored and enhanced the house, thoughtfully blending its historic Victorian charm with modern comfort to create a warm and welcoming stay for today’s traveller.
While the exact origin of the name “Ariel House” has been lost to time, the name carries fascinating historical and cultural echoes. Ariel was the name given to a moon discovered in 1851, just one year after the house was built, orbiting the planet Uranus. The name also appears in Shakespeare’s The Tempest (1610), where Ariel is a spirit of air and movement, and it is also associated with the ancient city of Jerusalem. Whether celestial, literary or historical, the name adds another layer of intrigue to this remarkable Victorian guesthouse in Dublin 4.
